Is
Your Thyroid Making You Fat?
By
Dr. Sanford Siegal, D.O., M.D.
Fifty percent of Americans are overweight--could as many
as half of them have their thyroid to blame? Dr. Sanford
Siegal, D.O., M.D. lets us in on the answer to that question
and many more in his breakthrough aid to weight loss Is
Your Thyroid Making You Fat? 28 Days to a Life-Changing
Diagnosis.
So
many men and women have tried any variety of diet and exercise
plans with no results or worse--weight gain! Many of these
people were tested for metabolic problems with conventional
methods such as the TSH test and told by their doctors that
they had normal thyroids--but that was before they met with
Dr. Siegal. In his forty years of practice, Sanford Siegal,
D.O., M.D. has seen thousands of patients who suffer from
obesity and monitored their thyroid activity. Dr. Siegal
has discovered that with an accurate diagnosis, a weight
problem can be brought under control with medication and
a special eating plan. And it's not only about weight loss;
Dr. Siegal has found numerous instances of his program improving
everything from fertility to memory loss. IS YOUR THYROID
MAKING YOU FAT? has a simple 28-day self-test that can determine
if an undetected thyroid problem is preventing readers from
achieving their weight-loss goals.
By
monitoring weight, temperature, and adhering to a diet of
a specific percentage of carbohydrates, protein, and fat,
readers will know within 28 days if they should seek medical
attention. Dr. Siegal's research and experience has shown
that Hypothyroidism is more widespread than it is generally
believed. There are many thyroid related factors that contribute
to health and weight problems--here are just a few of the
reasons why hypothyroidism is so often overlooked as the
culprit:
Hypothyroidism has many different signs and symptoms, but
a particular sufferer may only have a few
A patient who has never had a thyroid condition may suddenly
experience hypothyroidism as a result of age, pregnancy,
or medication
Many physicians place complete confidence in the
laboratory results for thyroid function, whereas there are
several other indicators of hypothyroidism such as a lower-than-normal
body temperature or elevated cholesterol
Patients that are assumed to have depression or chronic
fatigue syndrome may actually be suffering from hypothyroidism--prescribing
a thyroid hormone can often drastically change the personality
of a patient with hypothyroidism and would, in turn, greatly
reduce the reliance on antidepressants in treating depression

"This
book is an absolute must for those who've almost lost faith
in weight loss. For the multitude who've slogged through
a mountain of weight-loss diet books to no avail: You can
stop blaming yourself--it may be your sluggish thyroid."
-Robert Fried, Ph.D., co-author of The Arginine Solution
"Low-dose
thyroid supplementation--even when a patient tests in the
normal range of thyroid function--can be a useful therapy.
[This book] brings to light many unappreciated aspects of
the dynamic thyroid activity and a number of maladies."

Guidelines
for Detection of Thyroid Dysfunction -
The American Thyroid Association recommends that adults
be screened for thyroid dysfunction by measurement of the
serum thyrotropin concentration, beginning at age 35 years
and every 5 years thereafter. The indication for screening
is particularly compelling in women.
Hypothyroidism
-
In women with hypothyroidism treated with thyroxine, estrogen
therapy may increase the need for thyroxine.

Calcium
carbonate -
Scientists report that consuming calcium carbonate, the
most recommended form of calcium supplements can interfere
with your thyroid medication. According to a study done
at UCLA, calcium can prevent the absorption of thyroxine.
Now this just doesn't seem fair... as women are most likely
to be hypothyroid AND at risk for osteoporosis. However,
if you take your thyroid in the morning and your calcium
supplements at night, you can prevent this problem.
