The grieving process itself is a form of healing, an operation of our natural healing system.  Grief knows no time schedules.  How we grieve, and the length of time, varies greatly from person to person and depends on the nature of the loss.  Grieving is a necessary step to healing and a process of coming to terms with our loss.  We do get past it, as life does indeed go on.  However, things are never quite the same.

Here's a poem I've read several times over... when I've lost a loved one, or as a reminder of how precious life is....

"I'll lend you for a little while,
a child of mine, God said.
For you to love, the while she lives,
and mourn for when she's dead."

"It may be six or seven years,
or twenty two or three,
but will you, 'till I call her back,
take care of her for me?"

"She'll bring her charms to gladden you,
and should her stay be brief,
you'll have her lovely memories
as solace for your grief."

"I cannot promise that she will stay,
since all from earth return,
but there are lessons there on earth
that I want this child to learn."

"I've looked this wide world over,
for teachers kind and true,
and from the throngs that crowd life's lanes,
I've selected you."

"Now will you give her all your love?
Nor think the labor pain?
Nor hate me if I come to call,
to take her back again?"

To which the grateful parents said,
"Dear Lord, Thy will be done."
"For all the joys Thy child will bring,
the risk of grief we'll run."

"We'll shelter her with tenderness,
we'll love her while we may,
and for the happiness that we've known,
forever grateful we will stay."

"But should the Angels call for her,
much sooner than we've planned,
we'll brave the bitter grief that comes,
and try to understand."

Sometimes I do... sometimes I don't. I think it depends on what else is happening in my life at the time.
