On May 27, 2004, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) announced the results of the largest study ever conducted in the United States on the use of alternative medicine. The National Institutes of Health's National Center for Complementary and Alternative Medicine (NCCAM) surveyed 31,000 people in 2002 and found that 36 percent used complementary or alternative therapies, which included natural products, deep breathing and meditation, yoga, or diet, to improve their health. And if you count prayer as a healing modality, the percentage jumps up to over half the population -- 62 percent.

According to the study, the ten most commonly used alternative therapies are:

43 percent—Prayer for one’s own health
24 percent—Prayer by others for one’s own health
19 percent—Natural products (vitamins, minerals, herbs, enzymes, etc.)
12 percent—Deep-breathing exercises
10 percent—Participation in prayer group for one’s own health
8 percent—Meditation
8 percent—Chiropractic care
5 percent—Yoga
5 percent—Massage
4 percent—Diet-based therapies (such as Atkins, Pritikin, etc.)

The good and bad news is that women would be most apt to use alt therapies for treatments. My guess is men for the most part are affraid of touch from someone they are not involved with. Plus they need immediate results, no time for ongoing treatments. What are your thoughts on this?

I think it's that men tend to IGNORE their health problems until it's [almost] too late. Probably because they feel as if they have to "tough out" the situation. But I also agree that they want instant results... "here's the problem. Fix it."

I've been known to not seek out ANY help (can I even use the word "help" here???) from the conventional medicine camp... unless there's something seriously wrong -- like when I busted my head open. And now, even though I do NOT WANT to go to my OB/GYN, I know I really should get this test done (pap and biopsy scheduled for friday morning).

Well... on that note.. I think I'll head out for a latte!

yeah... I know that, and that's why I'm going. My doc wants to rule out hyperplasia, cervical cancer, etc.. Personally, I think he just wants to rule out the possiblity of a malpractice suit.

Nope. It's going to be a mocha latte.. with whipped cream on top!!! MMmmmmmm.... YUMMY!!!!

geez... it's taking Jr. FOREVER to get ready! She keeps saying "five more minutes." It's been 2 hours now!

think i'll go find that cattle prod...

LOL!!! I bet some women have done the same thing...lol!!!! I know my mom wouldn't do it because she wouldn't want to have someone she didn't know touching her. We tried to get her to have a massage. Even had her here when the girl came to the house, but nooooooooooooo....lol!!!! That's okay though, after the poor girl worked on my concrete shoulders and back I don't think she had the energy to do mom...lol!!!
