Virtues of alternative medicine extolled

"Straus said public appeal for complementary and alternative medicine in recent years has contributed to the government committing more money to study its effects. Upon approval, the national center is slated to receive $121.1 million from the fiscal year 2005 federal budget.

According to Straus, complementary and alternative medicine gained popularity because of media publicity of its dramatic results, the common belief that the treatments are natural and therefore better for you, its focus on spirituality and emotional well-being and the sense of patient empowerment."
